Dal fry is a very popular lentil preparation in India which is made of Toor Dal cooked with onion-tomato and spices. It is generally eaten with rice or rotis.
This is my moms very simple recipe for Dal fry.
Here is the step by step Dal fry recipe with pictures:
Serves: 2-3
Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Ingredients:
Toor Dal: 1/2 cup
Onion: 1 small finely chopped
Tomato: 1 small finely chopped
Ginger paste: 1/2 tsp
Garlic paste: 1 tsp
Green Chilly: 1 slit vertically
Turmeric Powder: 1/2 tsp
Chili Powder: 1/2 tsp
Garam Masala: 1/2 tsp
Coriander: 1 tbsp finely chopped
Salt: to taste
Method of Preparation:
- Soak the toor dal in sufficient water for around ½ hour and cook it in a pressure cooker (3-4 whistles)
- Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan. Add onion, ginger paste, garlic paste and green chilly. Stir fry till onion is translucent.
- Add tomato and stir fry till soft.
- Add cooked dal, turmeric powder, chili powder, garam masala and salt. Mix well. Let cook.
- Garnish with coriander.
