Ansaachi Shaak (Goan Pineapple curry) is an authentic Goan recipe. It is a sweet and sour pineapple curry which you are sure to enjoy! It is made of pineapples (Anas in konkani) from which it gets its name. This recipe is a no-onion, no-garlic recipe and is very easy to make. Mangoes can also be added to the recipe and they definitely enhance the taste even more.
Every time I visit Goa, I make sure to learn a few new authentic Goan recipes from my mother. I have always loved this recipe of Ansaachi Shaak and this time, I made sure to note down the recipe for the blog with the hope of trying it back home in Bahrain. I hope my readers enjoy this recipe as much as I do 🙂
Here is the step by step recipe for Ansaachi Shaak with pictures:
Serves: 4-5
Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Soaking Time: 1/2 hour
Cooking Time: 30 minutes
Ingredients:
Chana Dal: 1/4 cup
Jackfruit Seeds: 10 (optional)
Pineapple : 2 cups chopped
Mangoes: 3 ripe
Mustard seeds: 1 tsp
Grated Coconut: 1 cup
Dry Red Chilies: 2
Peppercorn: 1/2 tsp
Coriander seeds: 1 tsp
Jaggery 3 tbsp (+ more if required)
Salt: to taste
Turmeric Powder: 1/2 tsp
Garam Masala: 1/2 tsp
Method of Preparation:
- Soak the chana dal in water for 1/2 hour. Pressure cook the chana dal and jackfruit seeds till completely cooked (4-5 whistles)
- Grind together the coconut, red chilies, peppercorn and coriander seeds to smooth paste.
- Heat 1 tsp of oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, close lid and let splutter.
- Add pineapple and jaggery to the mustard seeds and mix well. Close lid and let cook till pineapple becomes soft.
- Add mango pulp and seed to the pineapple and let cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Add salt, turmeric powder and garam masala and mix well.
- Add the cooked jackfruit seeds, dal (step 1) and ground mixture (step 2) to the pineapple and mango mixture. Mix well and let cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Check the taste and add more jaggery if required. (The curry should not be very sour, it should be sweet and sour).
