Bread Upma is a very simple breakfast recipe which is very useful in finishing left over bread. Bread is broken into small pieces and cooked with an onion-potato and spices mixture to make bread upma.
This is my mums recipe for Bread Upma. It is very simple and gets ready very quickly. I usually make it when I want to finish left over bread.
I had not made Bread upma for a very long time (almost last 1 year). Yesterday, when I saw that the bread was nearing its expiry date, I started thinking about how to use it. I then remembered this recipe of and made it.
Here is the step by step bread upma recipe with pictures:
Serves: 2-3
Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 10 minutes
Ingredients:
Onion: 1 medium chopped
Green Chilies: 3 small slit vertically
Potato(Small): 1 sliced into small pieces
Green Peas: 2 tbsp
Grated Coconut: 1 tsp (optional)
Coriander: 2 tbsp finely chopped
Mustard Seeds: 1/2 tsp
Cumin Seeds: 1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder: 1 tsp
Salt: to taste
Method of Preparation:
- Heat 1 tsp of oil in a pan and put the mustard seeds and cumin seeds in it. Let splutter.
- Add onion and green chilies and stir fry till translucent.
- Add the potato and green peas and stir fry briefly.
- Add a little water and keep covered till the potato is cooked. Add 1/2 tsp turmeric powder and salt and mix well.
- In the meanwhile, cut the bread slices into very small pieces. Add 1/2 tsp turmeric powder, grated coconut and coriander and mix well.
- Add the bread pieces to the pan and mix well. Close lid and cook for 2-3 minutes.
