Patoli or Patoleo (plural) are sweet steamed wheat flour rolls stuffed with coconut and jaggery mixture. These turmeric leaf cakes are prepared in Goa on Nag Panchami and on the day of Tay/Hartalika, on the eve of Ganesh Chaturthi. It is made of wheat flour, grated coconut and jaggery, and cooked by wrapping and steaming in turmeric leaves which impart a lovely flavor to the pataleo.
Some people also use rice flour instead of wheat flour. But my mother has always been making them with wheat flour. So, I follow the same recipe.
I had never tried making Patoli as I always thought it was too complicated. This summer, when I was in Goa, my mother made Patoli for Nag Panchami. Isha loved them and they looked quite easy to make, so I carried turmeric leaves back to Bahrain from India. I tried making them for the first time on the eve of Ganesh chaturthi this year and they turned out just like my moms Patoli.
