Sweet Pongal ( Sakkarai Pongal) is the dish associated with the harvest festival Pongal in Tamil Nadu. In many temples, sweet pongal is given as Prasadham. It is very easy to make and gets ready quite quickly.
This recipe is a part of my new recipe series which I call ‘Flavors of India’ wherein I have requested people I know from various regions of India to share authentic recipes from their cuisine. The credit for this recipe of Sakkarai Pongal (Sweet Pongal) goes to my neighbor Malathi. Thank you Malathi for this easy and tasty Pongal recipe.
Here is the step by step recipe for Sakkarai Pongal (Sweet Pongal) with pictures:
Serves: 2-3
Preparation Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Ingredients:
Method of Preparation:
- Dry roast rice and dal separately until it is hot to touch.
- Pressure cook rice and dal together with 2 1/2 cups of water. Mash it well and keep it aside.
- Heat 1/4 cup of water in a pan and add jaggery to it. When it dissolves, filter it to remove impurities.
- Boil jaggery water with a tsp of ghee on medium heat. Take a cup of water, add a tsp of jaggery syrup to it, if it does not dissolve, then it is the right stage to add mashed rice and dal.
- Add mashed rice and dal mixture to the jaggery water and cook for a few minutes until everything gets blended well . Add cardamom powder and mix well.
- Heat 1 tsp ghee and fry cashew nuts. Add cashew nuts to the rice dal mixture.
- Add 1 tsp ghee to same pan and fry raisins until they puff up. Add raisins to the rice dal mixture along with ghee.
- Cook for a few minutes on low heat until everything gets blended well.

- Moong dal: ¼ cup
- Jaggery: 1 cup grated
- Cashew nuts: 2 tbsp chopped
- Raisins: 2-3 tbsp
- Cardamom Powder: ¼ tsp
- Ghee: 2-3 tsp
