Trifle is a delicious dessert which consists of a combination of jelly, sponge cake and custard. You can also make your own version of it by adding fruits of your choice, whipped cream etc. My mom used to make this very often when we were kids and I remember how much we would love it.
This weekend, I was wondering what to make for dessert and I suddenly remembered that I had not eaten Trifle for a very long time. I decided to make it and it was a super hit in my house. It is also a very simple recipe, and can serve as a perfect dessert if you are having guests over. You can either use ready made sponge cake or make your own.
Here is the step by step recipe for trifle with pictures:
Serves: 8
Preparation Time: 45 minutes
Cooking Time: NA
Ingredients:
Sponge cake: 8 pieces
Vanilla Custard Powder: 60 gm
Milk: 1 litre
Raspberry or Strawberry or Cherry Jelly: 85 gm packet
Raspberry or strawberry jam: As required
Whipping cream: 1/2 cup
Sugar: 8 tbsp
Chocolate Shavings: 1/2 cup (optional)
Peach: 1-2 Sliced (optional)
Method of Preparation:
- Mix the custard powder in 1 cup of cold milk. Boil the rest of the milk. Add the custard powder mixture slowly to the boiling milk stirring continuously. Keep cooking and stirring on low heat till custard thickens. Add 5-6 tbsp sugar and mix well till sugar melts. Place custard in the refrigerator for cooling.
- Prepare the jelly as per instructions given on the packet.
- Apply jam on both sides of the sponge cake piece. Take a dessert bowl and arrange a sponge cake piece on the base. You can also cut the sponge cake into very small pieces if you like it that way. I used a single piece big enough to cover the base.
- Cover the sponge cake with slices of peach. You can also use some other fruit if you do not like peach.
- Pour a part of the jelly mixture over the cake and fruit. Place in refrigerator till the jelly sets.
- Put a part of the custard mixture over the jelly.
- Whip the whipping cream till it forms soft peaks. Add 2 tbsp sugar and whip to form stiff peaks.
- Put a spoon or two of whipped cream over the custard.
- Finally garnish with chocolate shavings. This step is optional.
