Looking for something yummy yet healthy for breakfast or snacks for your kids? How about these tasty, crispy, healthy and easy-to-make home-made whole wheat waffles?
My daughters love waffles. I started off my making all purpose flour waffles and soon it became a weekly affair in my house. A few months back I decided to try a healthier version of the recipe. After all, I was making it so often that it seemed like such a good idea to make it healthier. These whole wheat waffles turned out to be a huge hit and my kids could not tell the difference. I make them quite often now and serve them topped with fruits, honey and chocolate sauce. They totally love it!
Here is the step by step recipe for Whole Wheat Waffles with pictures:

Method of Preparation:

- Mix together the flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon powder and sugar.
- Mix together the vanilla essence, melted butter, egg and buttermilk.
- Combine the dry and wet ingredients together until combined.
- Pour ladleful of waffle mixture in the waffles pan and let cook till done. The time required might vary based on the type of waffles iron which you have. Mine takes 15 minutes.
- You can top the waffles with cut fruits, honey, chocolate sauce etc.
Notes:
- If you do not have buttermilk handy, you can add 1 tsp of white vinegar to 1 and 3/4 cup warm milk and let it stand for 5 minutes. Then use this mixture in the waffles instead of buttermilk. I do this very often when I do not have buttermilk with me and it turns out very good.
- If the batter turns out too thick, add 1-2 tbsp water
I love trying healthier versions of the normally junk food which kids love. The kids are happy and me too 🙂
In the past I have tried many such yummy recipes which my kids have loved – Whole Wheat Pancakes, Whole Wheat Pizza, Whole Wheat Cookies, Baked French Fries, Baked Samosas. These Whole Wheat waffles are my latest addition to this list of yummy and healthy recipes.
